Eric copeland on Post Present Medium Records

Wow where did the time go? I'm thinking about the holiday weekend almost every minute...it's eating into my 7" time. Here's a single from a really consistently interesting member of Black Dice who have created some truly memorable electronic glitchy collage albums. I don't know if like Quentin Tarrantino he looks cliche because he's been assimilated so completely into visual culture, and in Black Dice's case audio, that they seem average. You had to be there I guess....but give them a listen these days, they've continued to work in extremes and creating really interesting sounds apart from a boring laptop scene, live they keep the performance aspect of summoning these surreal sounds....and they change, let's not forget, you could just hit play on the sequencer and stand there.
I forget sometimes about that huge connection between Black Dice and the Animal Collective guys, and then there's even that direct collaboration with Avery, Terrestrial Tones. When I sit down to think about this period of time and Brooklyn in music, with the woodsist bands/label, captured tracks, paw tracks/animal collective, I mean I get a little excited to have been here and seen little pieces of it, to live down the street from the address on the record, to see these guys at random empty basements...I'm not saying your city isn't awesome either, I'm just appreciating for a second.
Anyway Eric is a great artist on top of this sound insanity and there's a cool poster in this, that's already more than enough reason but guess what, Gun Outfit has a full length out too....remember how you had your eye on that Best Coast single?
Well it's gone.
Lesson learned.

Post Present Medium says:

Eric Copeland is an experimental musician based in New York. He is a core
member of Black Dice and forms half of the duo Terrestrial Tones with Animal Collective’s Avey Tare. This is a 7” of two epic EC solo tracks. The A Side “Doo Doo Run” is a great twisted and mutilated dub like jaunt through the murk. It keeps you moving along in any pace you seem to choose. The B Side “Fundinkdeath” is an almost garage rock gone through the tubes, some would say a pop.

Quail Lungs on Post Present Medium Records

Just heard about this single on PPM from Quail Lungs, a one man bedroom 4-track project? I'm in!
Haven't talked about PPM in a while and noticed they are sold out of the Best Coast single they recently put out, so here's an excuse to combine stuff for evil shipping.
Quail Lungs is Travis Bonilla from Portland, one of my favorite cities, home of Mississippi records. Listening to one of the tracks on this single, 'Dumb Dadadum' from his myspace is all about the acoustic guitar and cheap sounding casio organ, with some pretty incredible vocals. Kinks influenced, affected, with a sort of waltz rhythm keeping it on the up and up. Layered, half yelled... really enjoying himself, voice cracking, it's making sense when the sun comes out after the insane snowstorm. Things are going to be alright after all. These aren't songs of self flagellation, they are celebratory.
Other tracks over there really get into all kinds of weird canned demo percussions and reverb guitar, the 4-track experiments never get old for me.

QUAIL LUNGS "S/T" 7". FIRST PRESSING OF 500. BLACK VINYL. 2 SONGS.
PRINTED PURPLE AND WHITE COVERS.

Description - Two killer, garbled popular songs recorded to 4 track cassette. Quail Lungs lives in Portland Oregon, making weirdo songs described by one fan as "beautiful crisp snapshots of a real human being, extending life to others". Limited to 500 copies.

wavves - to the dregs -Post Present Medium

PPM24

a. To the Dregs
b. To the Dregs (version2)

'To the Dregs' is classic Wavves, if there is one track to play for someone who's never heard wavves it would be this track or 'So Bored' or 'Beach Demon'. I don't think To the Dregs is on the self titled release ... the one with the wheelbarrow handplant on it. I don't know if that's the same one on Fat Possum? Mine is on woodsist...I'm pretty sure. It's getting confusing. I have to say that sleeve pic pretty much won me over. It epitomizes my small town...we had those influences on MTV, 120 minutes, but we were in the middle of no where and they would get slightly changed somehow...like that game telephone. I imagine this kid kind of thinks skating is about doing handplants on everything....the way you see one skate magazine and try to emulate that in a weird, no blacktop anywhere kind of way. It's the closest thing you get to the elusive cool.
I'm shocked I figured out how to ollie one day. Or someone must have showed me...but I think I spent days and days in the street just 'practicing', hearing about someone in the next town over maybe was sponsored...so you never know. Get a piece of plywood and some bricks we'll build a ramp.
What does this have to do with wavves? It think it's the perfect soundtrack, and I don't know if it's weird I relate to this being a good ten years older than Nathan, I mean I don't know where that graphic came from on weed demon...but that is classic Thrasher magazine...Is that even still around? Or is it just he's way ahead of his time. I mean I hear a lot about what a stoner he is and he wrote these songs high playing nintendo....whatever. It's the soundtrack for this summer...I don't know why it bothers me....oh termbo.
I'm still listening to this album and every other mp3 I can find...so I know I'm going to get this...somehow.

This is supposed to come out on Post Present Medium, but I don't think it even hit the site yet, but then it's already sold out from Zum distro? I found this at Insound also...but can't think of what else to add in that order, and I've kind of sworn off doing that...after doing my taxes and adding up the record receipts I'm ashamed.
Hopefully it's still hitting PPM, and I can snag one.

Silk Flowers on PPM records....Podcast!

So.... this apparently is the sleeve art for the second pressing of this single, the single was a fist through the mask...according to their blog.
I have to say, I'm happy to add each and every band to my google reader rather then get it second hand from some news site that just barfs back every PR release...hear it from the people themselves, every mundane detail. Every limited release.
'Night Shades' starts out sounding a little bit like the soundtrack music they came up with for Steve Zizzou's science films in Life Aquatic..... really upbeat, keyboard...that's it....it's like a little 'free use' or 'copyright free' sounding...repeating, droning beeps in a little melodic scale...like the beginning of stereolab skipping.
It's pretty cleanly recorded, which is always a nice change...not to say you can't do that if you really think it adds to the overall texture of the sound, but there is inevitably going to be an immediate judgement that goes along with it, BE AWARE. None of that baggage here. That being said, there are some pretty weird interesting manipulated sounds...a kind of metal ball bearing bouncing on marble sound, that eventually ends up sounding like a huge sea of Cicada...all happening on top of that slightly cheesy instrumental heavily synthed thing going on. Another track has really high pitch/computer vocals happening on top of the main sung lyric...just plain weird...I don't know where Silk Flowers are coming from exactly...they can't be accused of following along with anyone.

They are playing tomorrow night at the 92nd Street Y, I'm going to see if I have any reason to be down in Tribeca.

SILK FLOWERS
New epic east coasters now fill the seat of "newcomer" to the PPM rodeo show. SILK FLOWERS is the sound you get when you take two friends from the band SOILED MATTRESS AND THE SPRINGS and another friend from CAR CLUTCH and CORPSE KISSER and mix them all up and give a good shake. Sort of borders the line of KRAFTWERK on a four-track meets cough / cool era MISFITS... i know that sounds insane, and it is! Expect new jams coming in February in the form of a 7" and also expect a new full length in the spring time. ART ART AWAY.

Back to Matt and I hanging out...picking up where we left off....
The Matt saga continues...randomly selecting 7 inches out of a pile and making fun of them. We play the new Dave Bazan...everyone hates it. I really try to make a case for him but Matt keeps me honest. It is depressing, I can't lie. Next up Nodzzz 'I don't wanna smoke marijuana', (we like to drink)...Matt approves?!!? Maybe he just likes saying the name. We of course discuss our drug use. It gets ruined by singing. Then the Wicked Awesomes...Matt confuses them with the Wicked Farleys. The cover is wicked awesome. We debate recording processes.
Thank you.

party fowl on PPM records

This kind of has a Pixies kind of feel, the way the pixies kind of combined these obvious things, or Blood on the Wall, enthusiastically pulling from the best things of an era and sounding great. It's high speed, lots of Minor Threat influence with distorted vocals. But then it changes up a little for the next track to a sort of rockabilly or something. I could love them like 7 seconds in the garage on a tape deck, skating back and forth trying not to fall.
This makes perfect sense on PPM and opening for the whole Cali crew at the smell.
I'm even hearing a little ministry...it's party punk, but with lots of blues scale sounding guitar at super high speed. Power chords and breakdowns. Bring back the 80's california punk rock. Gleam the cube.

gun outfit on PPM records

From Post Present Medium comes a new single from the Gun Outfit. I was just reading about Dinosaur Jr in Michael Azerrads Our band could be your life it definitely made me want to go back and revisit Living all over you and I can hear the parasol comparison here. It's got that kind of not trying too hard vocals...very Thurston-esque, and something very low-fi about the guitar recording...it just sounds immediate...the vocals recorded in the next room, that late night kind of thing. But not with Dinosaurs guitar virtuosity...which still ... have to say, I never loved.
I always remember hearing Lou Barlow side projects and his hate for the solo...likewise you won't find any of that here...just tons of carefree chords and nice backing female vocals.
I think it's two guitars and drums, which aren't all effects, it sounds like just an amp footpedal, or the MXR distortion...it's a call back to indie songwriting...not trying to blow you over with sound...just sincere love of indie guitar...and power chords.
The lyrics jotted down on a bunch of napkins...this could easily fit in with the late nineties 7" scene...Eric's trip...when everything seemed like it could be recorded in someones dorm room...it's a particular rhythm this is reminiscent of...like there's an indie BPM or something.
It just sounds...dare I say...nice.
There's two other songs besides 'Your will' on the PPM myspace.
Like a low-fi Blood on the Wall, but focused on a particular guitar sound. Not trying to sound like the entire 90's...just like one month.

By the way, the Liars/No Age split 7" is still available there...so now you have no excuse....pick these two up.

This review from Parasol:

No Age - Liars Tour Split

Originally I was going to mention the Abe Vigoda repress from PPM because I liked it a lot, I know they are a little bit of a mess live, according to my friend who saw them open for No Age at South Street Seaport....their live reinterpretation of their new full length (on PPM By the way) didn't translate live.
Apparently they went on with Telepathe sometime between 7 and 8....No Age didn't start until 8:45? Weird and annoying. I love seeing shows outside in the summer, especially free. It kind of works out nice to see Seaport shows Friday and then Sunday shows at Mccareen Pool. The seaport isn't that crowded and if you want to have shit Uno's pizza you could sit way up on this balcony....so I'm all for this space, but the show was over by 9:15 and no encore no nothing....I'm sure they have some kind of agreement with the space to be over by dark or something.
The sound can be shitty there too, I understand they are working in a really bad space, but they should have been doing this enough by now to figure it out.
No Age was still suffering from trying to make that jump to playing huge venues. They were fumbling a little working the crowd and the sound was shit. Not that have to have perfect sound or anything, it might even work for them to play with the differences in sound quality, or the sound guy was trying to overcompensate for the intended mess.

But I digress...this tour 7" was at PPM.... I overlooked it somehow, so I thought I'd throw it out there as I didn't see it mentioned anywhere...No Age and Liars split, kind of like when Jack Black makes fun of John Cusack for slipping in a new band with some classics in his mix tape. This 7" is like passing the torch to the new guard. We like you, you are bad ass, join the club...and it's on PPM so the Liars get back in touch with their underground side.
I wish I could find out if these are album tracks or completely unique to the 7". A crazy split that I didn't know existed....can't wait to hear this one.
