No Age - Liars Tour Split

Originally I was going to mention the Abe Vigoda repress from PPM because I liked it a lot, I know they are a little bit of a mess live, according to my friend who saw them open for No Age at South Street Seaport....their live reinterpretation of their new full length (on PPM By the way) didn't translate live.
Apparently they went on with Telepathe sometime between 7 and 8....No Age didn't start until 8:45? Weird and annoying. I love seeing shows outside in the summer, especially free. It kind of works out nice to see Seaport shows Friday and then Sunday shows at Mccareen Pool. The seaport isn't that crowded and if you want to have shit Uno's pizza you could sit way up on this balcony....so I'm all for this space, but the show was over by 9:15 and no encore no nothing....I'm sure they have some kind of agreement with the space to be over by dark or something.
The sound can be shitty there too, I understand they are working in a really bad space, but they should have been doing this enough by now to figure it out.
No Age was still suffering from trying to make that jump to playing huge venues. They were fumbling a little working the crowd and the sound was shit. Not that have to have perfect sound or anything, it might even work for them to play with the differences in sound quality, or the sound guy was trying to overcompensate for the intended mess.

But I digress...this tour 7" was at PPM.... I overlooked it somehow, so I thought I'd throw it out there as I didn't see it mentioned anywhere...No Age and Liars split, kind of like when Jack Black makes fun of John Cusack for slipping in a new band with some classics in his mix tape. This 7" is like passing the torch to the new guard. We like you, you are bad ass, join the club...and it's on PPM so the Liars get back in touch with their underground side.
I wish I could find out if these are album tracks or completely unique to the 7". A crazy split that I didn't know existed....can't wait to hear this one.

Mikaela's Fiend/Abe Vigoda split 7"

I have been hearing so much about Abe Vigoda, and the 2 songs on their myspace don't disappoint. I think I saw this on KDVS's playlist like 3 or 4 weeks in a row. 'Dead city waste wilderness' has all the elements of animal collective, around Sung Tongs, crazy repetitive beats, high pitch guitar loops that double back on themselves. They are yelling sounds, tracks and tracks of vocals. Rim shot solos, breakbeat cowbells and just a hint of electronics. Every time I hear it, I swear it could be a track from animal collective. it's challenging, and unexpected in the best ways. Are they and animal collective working as part of some kind of movement? I don't think that could really be happening in terms of a distinct sound. I think I make that comparison because of it's individuality. (?)

Mikaela's Fiend sounds lightning bolt fast, an similarly all fuzzed out, really pushing the limits of listenability, when they hit and sustain certain notes...yikes. On top of whatever neo punk thing they have going on, electronics will spaz their way in here and there.

I think both sides are kind of an amazing document of where things are right now, the state of distinctly american music...to me anyway. It's exactly what I've been looking for.

Two songs of high caliber from West Coast kings of the all-ages scene. Abe Vigoda's "World Heart" is a potent jam of their "tropical punk" stylings. Talking Heads and Unwound comparisons hit close to the mark, but this is an evolutionary step forward even from their "Kid City" album.
Mikaela's Fiend provide us with "Blanket", an epic pounder from this Seattle duo.

I found it on parasol, and ordered Abe Vigoda's Animal ghosts 7" there too, Paul from 7",10",12" was right, nice heads up, I'm finally coming around. Merry Christmas myself.

"World Heart" brings the Chino, CA quartet's ambition and melodic invention to the next level. Mikaela's Fiend have been wowing basements and youth centers since forming as teenagers in 2003. Cousins Chris Ando and Donnie Shoemaker utilize a blast of woolly processed guitar and Shoemaker's herculean beats. Their early 7"s sold quickly on legendary live shows and word of mouth, leading to an album "We Can Driving Machine" on Strictly Amateur Films. Their most recent recorded output is a split EP with Twin (fka King Cobra, ex-NEED).
