Games on Robs House

Does anyone find it weird at all that this nice, harmonic pop is coming from these three tough guys? Is this sweet boy garage band sound about some kind of reliving fake history with a new generation? I mean it sounds so freaking close to some of the bands from that era. Late '50s, '60s, parts of Beach Boys harmony rock, the dirty Kinks, The Mummys....why is this sound still so classic and relevent? And are the only guys into this sound are the ones who know that history?
I mean I guess I like that you could subversively get your parents to listen to this and they wouldn't tell you to turn that racket off. Just knowing that makes me a little nuts. How do they make this cool? It's some kind of perfect storm of musical elements. The simplicity of a 3 piece, a verse/verse chorus, slight distortion with harmonized vocals. I guess that's never going to go away and this garage pop sound actually isn't a dirty word, it's kind of been redefined by bands like these guys, Nobunny, Pujol....the list these days goes on forever.

In their description it reminded me of how these guys would have looked 10 years ago...or even for that matter how this came out of the Busy Signals. Now that I listen back to that self titled LP and they had a pretty extreme garage pop sound. When I finally got to it, it ended up preparing me for Blood Visions. I was probably into Sufjan a little too much, but I kept throwing them on because it was always fun and deceptively simple, like the Ramones, I just wanted to hear it again. Once I wore it out I wanted more - a new version of that power chord punk, and Jay took that place.
I'm glad to hear these guys are continuing this thread into today.

Rob's House says:

GAMES are made up of ex members of BUSY SIGNALS and GENTLEMEN JESSE, but to call them a powerpop band would be missing the point. These guys are mining sounds that predate that stuff by a good 5-10 years. Yea, its the kinda stuff that would later influence 'powerpop' (Greg Shaw recognized this early on when he reissued Rockin' Horse on his Voxx label) but there are no skinny ties and Rickenbackers. Instead, Games are tackling maturer themes with a slightly darker approach to pop. You'll also notice a few glam undertones as Games' seem to be genuinely interested in exploring all 'pop' can offer rather than repackaging / remarketing any one style. Rob's House is pleased to release Games' debut single.

Bobby and the soft spots on Rob's House - 7"'s cure cancer

Robs House latest comes via a completely redesigned website...and that's where I saw a new Jacuzzi boys 7" is scheduled next month....nice. And the weakends LP...I've been hearing good things about them, and heard their 7" from Rob's House...more french invasion, garage...weird.

'Just can't get her off' is the A-side From Bobby and the Soft Spots...I think he might not only be referring to someone being literally on him but probably something else..one of those innuendo's. I also keep thinking he's saying 'Just can't get enough' and this is a garage/punk cover of the Depeche Mode classic....yea right.
This is rowdy bar, american 80's punk, or late 70's...a lot of chorus, power chords. It's the kind of thing you couldn't ever imagine anyone getting pissed off at a bar and throwing something at. It's born out of those places...it's the default music for a beer bottle smashing, chair throwing time.

But most importantly all proceeds from this single go to helping Bobby fight his cancer.
This is Rob's kick ass cancer curing 7".
Who knew.

Now I can finally feel good about buying yet another single.

rhr044: Bobby & the Soft Spots -
coming late october bobby ubangi [the lids, gaye blades] fronts this drunken mess of atlantans called the soft spots [feat. members of gaye blades, spooks
and beat beat beat]. if you've heard any of bobby's previous output you'll know he's a craftsman of the three-chord garage sing-alongs with some of the most poppy lyrics written and these songs are all that with a bit more beer. classic ubangi! [1000 pressed; black vinyl, co-release with DSH ] side a: can't get her off. side b: i don't need you.

*regretably, bobby has been diagnosed with some pretty nasty cancer. because rob's house loves him so much and in an effort to offset some of his medical expenses all proceeds from this record will go straight to bobby.

New Tyvek! Mladys.

I love that this Tyvek single reminds me of being in high school, fucking around in the garage, you don't know any better you don't care, partially driven by just wanting to get out of your town, meet new people. There's nothing better to do, and you have this idea that you don't have to be the next MTV band, your stupid town is good enough, and you are your own audience. As long as you and your friends have fun then that's just enough to get by inbetween getting drunk...except that these guys have talent.
But it's that raw sound of a tape deck microphone recording a live show...every day. Does it even matter this was committed to magnetic tape and then pressed as grooves? Obviously this is best live and begging for reinterpretation...but this single will have to do, and it's a damn good facsimilie for authenticity.
This song is actually deconstructing sidewalks....that someone is contracted to build this line in the neighborhood, the infrastructure it's kind of a futile attempt to stop decay.
I've already listened to it like 10 times.
Shit..... they are good

So far Mladys is speaking my seven inch language, I don't even mind the $10 min paypal thing...that makes sense, and I can spring for 2 singles...I'm trying to figure out what the other one should be. Bad Thoughts is pretty awesomely minimal, and all quiet basslines...tons more singles in the works too...I don't know where Mladys came from but they need a singles club like I need a giant hole in my 45's.

Podcast episode 23: Me and Matt listen to Mono...and talk about how great they are...we work through more amoeba acquisitions, like Errors, who are amazing. We ruin it by talking...honestly. Matt talks about his recording with Bad at Sports. We play guess that single. (It's Minor Threat), this sets us drunkenly talking about fugazi etc..for 10 minutes. Lucky you.
