Mudboy - Mudmux Vol 1 on DNT records. Interview Pt2

This is another single I got a little confused at what speed it's meant to be heard...it's certainly frantic enough at 45, but 33 sounds just a little too slow, so 45 is what I'm sticking with.....it's more bent elecronic-y.

Immediately this is really creating some kind of 90's horror movie theme tension, like any good John Carpenter soundtrack.... combined with all kinds of clipped and cut up beats behind panning back and forth. Quiet sinister wind howling, breathy noises and I think there's a conversation ...or some kind of human voices somewhere in the mix.
Apparently this was an old midi file unearthed on a floppy from what I'm getting was a previous project from mudboy called Extreme Animals(?). Or maybe he just knew them to get permission to use this? This track originally entitled 'Raprockpoprocks' now dubbed 'Lil John Carpenter Tribute Song', which leads me to believe there's some lil' John samples/influence in there somewhere, along with the mixed in metal clanging, and cymbal crashing which pokes out over the synth line every few measures.
It increasingly gets electronic and glitchy and takes you out back where it started on slow deliberate synth bassline.

The B-side takes you in a completely different direction...originally by the DarkDarkDark band called 'Come Home'...it's all accordion and slow vocals from Nona Marie Dark. Another ominous track Mudboy devolves into tempo bending slowness by the end, drawing out a single word for seconds, turning them spectral. The voice turned ghostly entity who is asking you to come home...but probably by now means come home to die. The vocals are two different takes layered across channels with real huge separation. I'm getting the feeling Mudboy tends to take things on a dark path, and gravitates towards working this kind of thing.

Mudboy seems to be somewhat of a renaissance man based out of providence and has done sound installations, builds custom instruments and sells artwork/music releases on his site.
The DNT packaging as always is amazing...this is no exception...the printed sleeve is ultra thick ink and almost seeps through the other side...real handmade and one of a kind.

Apparently this is part of a series of reworking various material across a bunch of labels. I haven't been able to find any info an Vol.2, but I'm guessing it's going to be a mixed bag of cassette, 7", and CD-R.

PPS- extreme animals isnt an old offshoot of mudboy- its a separate band, part of paper rad sort of. Just buddies.

Podcast episode 30 - Tynan from DNT interview

Episode 30: Finally... my friend Matt departed the 7inches bunker so I could call Tynan from DNT records to talk with him for a bit in between the baseball playoffs and our coastal time differences. This is Part 1 of the interview, and I really appreciate Tynan for taking some time to talk about DNT with 7inches. I'm psyched to do this and hopefully will be able to continue this series of interviews in between the completely uninformative and useless mess of drunken episodes.
But don't worry they aren't going away....completely.

Sheperds on DNT records

Shepherds, who I've heard now on a few Bored Fortress offerings offer up more jazz (?) weirdness on DNT. This might even have been released before the Not Not Fun club stuff and it's a nice change from the noise assault I wouldn't put past this duo from meneguar and vanishing voice heritage.
I don't claim to know too much about free jazz, or this kind of improvised tape experimental area. It wanes in and out of my consciousness, being this whole subgenre that just seems a little daunting. I know it's a whole world in and of itself but it's the kind of thing I'm turning over and over and I'm not so alienated I can't find an entry point. I guess it could fall into a neo-psyche area...it doesn't have the pointed direction of all out drug induced, but it definitely doesn't hurt. It continues to get better after a few drinks.
In fact I'm losing track of which side started what after a few listens, it's part of the same session originally destined for a 3" CDR, which, let's face it, doesn't hold a candle to the 7" format, the crackling and pops add to the timelessness. But I'm a little biased of course and it does make me wonder what had to be trimmed out of this piece or how they decided on a breaking point for the B-side.
It's really controlled for seeming improvisation, the drums fade in and out of structure and the played loops or live organic horns and haunting samples keep working outside of any typical systems. It works slowly from deconstruction and chaos into a drum trance.

Thankfully the speed (33) and side are etched into the gutter so I'm not playing it at the wrong speed, although this piece lends itself to your own sort of manipulation.
It's a nice expansive track and rightfully pressed in a few editions by now. I got the white one and there are still copies available at DNT, who can be counted on for challenging work like this. Literally this is the new music of the 21st century composers. I don't know what David Del Tredici is doing these days, but he could learn a thing or two from this new wave of sincerly pushing genre's and boundaries.

robedoor - 8" lathe cut

Someday I will take the time to sort out all the acts working in this noise-scape haunted anti wave that's happening because I need to keep reminding myself by listening all over again to each one of these side projects. It doesn't help that they are all on split 7"'s with each other and members are swapped between things...Not Not Fun, dnt, they created this amazing movement/ scene that is expanding out into the universe. This is ground zero for exactly the most interesting sound being created.

I mean if you feel like experimental noise that you've never heard before.

I think the description from NNF sums it up the best "headless druids falling through a portal", it's nightmarish, sound, why is it scary? I keep asking myself, what is it about what's here that's so unsettling? Maybe it's the disconnect from any sound reference, you don't immediately recognize the noises. There's nothing jarring, nothing making you jump...screaming, it's more subtle, building up, but it's organic somehow. There's no grating keyboard/electronics, it's all ghostly. Like the tribal ghost punk of These are Powers. It's going to take a long time to sort out, make some sense of, but will never stop being so rewarding.

Again, if you're in the mood for druids falling through portals...

Health on suicide squeeze

I got this full length at permanent records the other weekend and I had misjudged this band, the full length which was on red clear vinyl, from lovepump united...DNT has the cassette also fyi, and maybe it's because of their split with crystal castles (also still available from Lovepump) that I got so confused. It was all over the place, I was so confused in a good way, the same thing I got listening to Blood on the Wall. This was less melody and traditional song structure, and more sound experiment, ranging from this tribal distortion scream, to electronica, I didn't even have a reference, it was all over the place in a great way.
I didn't know what to expect next and it's so confusing I have to keep listening to it to try to figure it out. But it's pretty mysterious and dark, like These are powers, they are chanelling something primal and I'm really into it.
So Suicide Squeeze is releasing this 7" in February, and maybe they have all kinds of 7"'s planned this year, I got the feeling it's part of some kind of series or something. Go preorder it, it's going to be gone. That full length vinyl is sold out.
That reminds me of another act on suicide squeeze Hella, kind of similar, complex, crazy sound, don cab through ring modulation. Always challenging.
The B-side is a remix, which I don't know....I like health, not remixers.

shearing pinx / silver daggers

Silver Daggers is some fucked up saxophone, and distortion, they are really fighting to get together, and it's pretty nice when it does. I think they have some kind of affiliation with Load records of course. Impressive stuff. Indescribable.
Shearing Pinx is 2 guitars, drums and some noise, I am into silver daggers sax, but I think I am more excited about these noises.
I kind of think I need to be isolated from any other input when I listen to this, like in a dark room with headphones in an easy chair. This stuff demands your attention, it is not background music.

This is on DNT records, and they are having a crazy sale on all of their catalog. $21 for any 5 7"'s, I'm choosing mine right now. Tynan runs the label and busts his ass creating all of this limited packaging, help him out and get something from this sale. There's tons of great projects releasing super limited stuff here. Racoo-oo-oon, Gang wizard, Woods, Magic markers. A world of unexplainable/nightmare sound to explore.
I guess I have to be in the right frame of mind to want to challenge myself and listen to this kind of thing, but I'm ready.
