Chin Chin - We Don't Want to be Prisoners on Mississippi Records

Mississippi really needs to have a subscription club or something...I'd even be happy with just direct mailorder for god's sake. They're the perfect example reminding us for whatever one band is insanely over hyped in any given time period, there are a hundred bands that have more interesting things going on, and that because of politics, labels, and just plain personal issues they just undeservedly fell by the wayside.
There should be more Mississippi Records curated labels out there doing this great work. The best part is how eclectic their releases are, something like this 80's punk, kettle drum street performers, Jay Abner, it's all on equal playing field. If a record store has a special section for the Mississippi, that's the sign of a record store I'll be going out of my way for. Maybe they're doing physical mom and pop places an incredible service by not existing online...you're forced to track them down literally down the street...(this one was at Permanent Records in greenpoint), or scour every online distro.

The first track, 'We don't want to be Prisoners', is sonically what you're expecting from the early 80's..everything is heavily separated, the thin kick drum, off beat clean guitars...minimal vocal energy. I wonder what they were modeling this sound after...what audience they were going for. It should have been a lot more raw, it's trying to compete with Blondie or X-Ray Specs. I already want a demo version of these tracks. Still it has to be very few takes, lots of little accidents, everyone singing every verse on top of each other with a sincere Swedish accent that just has to be honest, no one would do that on purpose. Take a look at that cover, they aren't punk, it's catchy new wave pop with a bad ass edge. The best is a really weird xylophone sounding guitar part that comes in. I'm not entirely sure it isn't a xylophone, but then it could have just been recorded completely wrong...in a good way.
Usually the thing with these reissues is they're still such a part of a particular sound that whatever tiny contribution they've made to some direction or another it's lost in so much nostalgia that it's impossible to step away from and still take seriously somehow...but this really delivers on this moment in the early eighties with a rare band that transcends the typical traps of punk...I think it's all the great harmonies like on the B-Side with 'Desires only' it gets even more pop, singing background ahh harmonies a little more, the main vocal in super high register. It is getting a little cute, I can hear the Go-Go's kind of reference they're talking about but maybe that's just because I'm hearing it after Pocahaunted and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was a different world, just existing in this scene was revolutionary. It's just inspiring to think there were probably bands like this at one point starting in garages all over the world, and a lone 7" caught it on Farmer Records.

I loved the Animals and Men and The Rats reissues I picked up at the store in Portland, and this is another great addition...it's really amazing what they come up with for lazy historians like myself. They're like the folkways records...the library of congress archives...for genius.

Midheaven and Forced Exposure still have it, it's out at goner, scratch and werido records...probably the last few left.

From Biel Switzerland, comes this little known group. One of the few all-girl bands (along with Kleenex/Lilliput) to come out of the early 80's Swiss punk scene. Chin Chin definitely considered themselves a punk band. Although their catchy pop vocals and harmonies strongly aligned them with the burgeoning C86 scene. They shared bills with The Shop Assistants, Television Personalities, The Pogues and New Model Army, before the band drifted into obscurity. This 7" was originally released in 1984 on the band's own, Farmer Records. It contains 3 self-penned songs and marks their first and punkest release. Keep your eyes peeled for their full length LP out soon as a split between the Mississippi and Slumberland labels.

De Kift on Mississippi Records

Dear Mississippi Records,
How do you do it? Where do you come up with these amazing reissues? How did you find out about this band from De Kift the Netherlands from the late 80's? Did you used to listen to them? Are you just making up band names and typing them into myspace?
You're like my friend Jay, when we first started skating in high school, he would bring over tapes of the coolest music; Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, the Gorilla Biscuits, 7 Seconds. He was the best, I couldn't keep up with his cassettes, every time we hung out was a music education, while we wiped out on the launch ramp.
Even now you're still that older brother who knows about really amazing music you never heard of, that influenced all the crap you're listening to lately...even if you look them up now, and they don't sound anything like they used to (Franz Ferdinand covers De Kift?). But I'm not going to question you, I know you know what you're talking about, plus you're just a nice guy, you're coming from a good place and are just selling things at cost to you, I appreciate it. It's really altruistic, sharing your music knowledge, Mississippi Records.
Maybe you're like Jack Black in High Fidelity and I'm the guy that wants to buy 'I just called to say I love you', but you don't laugh at me or tell me to leave, you just calmly release another record of things I've never heard of.
Thanks for not kicking me out of the store.
But please... are you scared of the mailorder business? Do you want to send me on an internet scavenger hunt like a sorority girl? Is that part of it? You have to be a little mysterious, so I want to hang out even more?

That's pretty sneaky Mississippi, but it makes me sad we can't be closer.

This ebay listing has all the tracks to preview which was very nice.

Get it from Fusetron:

*Artist: DE KIFT
Title: De Kift
Format: 7"
Label: Mississippi
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Spunky 1988 release. A fairly unknown predecessor to their debut LP Yverzucht. Impossible to find and never reissued. Three songs of driving rhythms and volatile speech. Another testament to the uniquely prolific 80s Dutch punk scene." Awesome tri-fold, heavy cardstock sleeve with Dutch/English lyrics. -Mississippi

Abner Jay on mississippi records

This came to my attention via Volcanic Tongue:

Abner Jay
Depression/I’m So Depressed
Mississippi Records No Cat
7”
£7.99

Totally cool single release from Mississippi that bundles real people/folk spirit legend Abner Jay’s classic “I’m So Depressed” in an alternate solo version along with a stunning full-band house-rocking take entitled “Depression” on the flip. Totally fantastic – has to be heard to be believed. Highly recommended.

This is just one of those amazing stories that is going to make tracking this down really worth it. Abner Jay himself is just one of those amazing american blues one man band forgotten artists, he plays with this great tremolo electric picking guitar and incredible voice. Supposedly he played out of an RV that would convert into a stage for random shows wherever he ended up playing hundreds of classic reinterpreted blues and originals on a banjo passed down in his family from the late 1700's!
Of course the two tracks here are about depression...the lyrics are so amazing...it's not typical blues...he's really belting it out kind of 50's echo style, great melodies, with harmonica...a weird flat metallic high hat and kick drum.

We had nothing / we had nothing / but grasshoppers

I am a boy so full of love / I have no one to hold my hand

I love how this is recorded...minimal and powerful...that sincerity of just sharing these songs with anyone who would listen.

Then Mississippi records founded by Byron Coley, Thurston Moore and Johan Kugelberg in 1983, (No they didn't actually, as a couple people pointed out....what!!! wikipedia is wrong!?) which has released only vinyl by the way in insane limited numbers of undiscovered gems like this, released this...I think recently...the only way to get any of this stuff is through distro's or visiting the physical store in Seattle (wrong again.... Portland, WA)... the mythology just grows and grows.

You can go hear 'I'm so depressed' on Chances with Wolves.

Academy in Brooklyn just posted that they got a few copies of this and his full length in....I'm going to go head over there and check it out.

sad horse - fuck side project single - (Cassie I'm sorry)

SAD HORSE
Sad Horse

7", Cat# MR-026
(2008, Mississippi Records)

TRACK LIST:
// 01 Coyotes
// 02 Space
// 03 Made In China
// 04 Rain
// 05 Veins
// 06 Gimme Gimme

I really like Fuck...Baby loves a funny bunny, was great, the matchbook packaging. It made me buy the CD, and it's one of the still have it. That was a while back...either way, I tracked down their site...they seem to have a whole underground scene all their own going on. Wiki says they were signed to Matador, then wouldn't change their name???? What about Fucked up? Weird
I liked the quietness at the time, the attention to detail, the minimalism. Lyrically they felt like pavement. I could always count on putting them....they went along with a whole Rex, Bedhead phase I was going through.
The band name isn't bad either...I can't miss a single from a mile away...anywhere.
Recently a video store on Bedford was closing their record section in the back room and I found fuck's first single with a bunch of collage magazine stuff glued onto the front of it....crazy.

Sad Horse isn't fuck at all...it's stripped down reverb guitar, a little messy two piece of singing/yelling girl guy duo. 'Rain' is sounding like a Yips and Coathangers mashup...slightly recorded far away in a rehearsal space...just all raw and in one take. Makes perfect sense with the wave of garage shit gaze without all the shit movement. Can't wait.

SAD HORSE is the newest Fuck offshoot. A 2-piece from Portland, Oregon made of Geoff SouleVenable (from The Naysayer band) on drums. They do it fast, short, fun and skronky. A six song 7" (punk rock!) is slated for release later this summer by esteemed Portland label Mississippi Records. Until then you can hear them live and get a copy of their 21 minute long, 17 song demo (punk rock!) at a town in middle America near you.

SAD HORSE 7" EP, released by Portland's esteemed Mississippi Records. Limited edition of 500 copies, most of which have already been shipped off to weird European collectors, so act fast rabbit!

******In Regards to Yesterday's Post******

Cassie,
Ben's comment put it into perspective a little, I don't know you, you probably don't even put the packages together, you have to deal with everyone else's fuck ups. I get really irrational when it comes to 7"'s.

I publicly apologise.

I fire off some offhanded jab at shit that is annoying me in the moment. I shouldn't have called you out like that, you doesn't deserve it and I'm sure you're good at your job....

I guess I'm just asking the question about supposed 'indie' retailers like this and if anyone else has had a bad experience. I just won't be falling over myself to order next time. I get sucked in by promo shit like that when it comes to 7"'s and setting myself up for disappointment.

I'm sure they'll still take my money.
