GGreen is back with his second single, this time it looks like a band has formed, and it's taken a turn from the home recorded inside the brain space of G. and has spread to 3 other members and I think his material definitely benefits. It's one thing to come up with something in the middle of the night, delirious and fuzzy. I appreciate that specific vision, I want to hear it, but it's another thing entirely to make this leap and put together a group of people to add their take on things and even play live. Like Mess Folk,....it just gets better. You have to stand there night after night and belt this out, the vocals aren't quite as idiosyncratic...it's more desperate and I like it.

It's even like German Measles or Home Blitz, sort of punk, quirky, nerdy, raw...the song is the most important thing...there's enough rehearsal that they don't come off like the Germs or something...don't kill the audience. You're kidding yourself if you think it's shocking...it'll be original if you don't try. Does this guy even know he's good?

'Looks' is the only track up on the myspace, and jesus it could be a lost Nodzzz track, I can hear the x-ray glasses. I just like a mess like this, it isn't too garage, or even lo-fi...just playing catchy tracks with fucking feeling.

Take a listen to a live version of Mouth on the Floor, it's a totally different feel than the Out of Order single. The crowd is really screaming at the end, it sounds like a dungeon nightmare...kind of a weird idea.

Keep putting these 7" out. It's shaping up to be the start of something good.

A 2nd Opinion with Travis Kostell

Recently my friend Travis from high school and I found each other online. He inspired me with the most amazing mix tapes and films in the tiny upstate town I grew up in. He moved sometime around freshman year and just had a whole world of music I had never heard of. In the days without the internet, it's hard to believe I know, but we had to make mixes for each other and borrow cassettes of anything that wasn't on the radio. I don't think I even knew who Frank Zappa was until I met Travis, from there it went into the Church of the Subgenius and a cult scare fiasco banning 'Bob' in the hallways to watching Eraserhead at his house. On top of it, he was an amazing musician who pretty much inspired me to get a 4-track and start a new band every weekend.
Everyone has a friend like Travis, so I sent him some singles I've been thinking about recently and we talked on the phone about them.

This week we got to the GGreen single from Out of Order Records, then Cave bears on Feeding Tube Records and finally Fuck Montreal on Stumparumper.

Heather from Out Of Order Records Interview

This Friday's podcast, Episode 62 (20min) is an interview I did with Heather from Out of Order Records. We talked about her latest release from GGreen of course and how the single came about. She also got into her sold out pressings of The Dissimilars and The Trashies ... how she just beat Plastic Idol Records by an email to the tracks on the Dissimilars single. Heather was a DJ at KDVS and was exposed to an insane amount of music there with her show Live in the Warzone. She also publishes her Out of Order zine and comics about being vinyl obsessed.

As if I needed another perfect example of a homegrown label from someone passionate enough to put some money behind music they believe in, Heather made it sound way too easy and fun not to try...soon.
