For this weeks episode Darren and I invited Buckflix.tk founder, Travis to join us in talking about the documentary "Vinyl" by Alan Zweig. Instead of being a cautionary tale we realize how much we relate to the guys in the film who cover every inch of their houses with shelves for records, throw them away instead of letting people have them or attempt to collect every song ever written.

The great Mike Dikk from Kissing Contest emailed me about the Black Devil Doll from Hell single on Poisoned Mind Records. It launched a serious record nerd back and forth and our latest soundtrack podcast. I had never heard of this crazy movie, director or soundtrack. Travis from Buckflix ordered me a copy, we got Darren to think about some soundtracks from his collection and were schooled by Travis and barely covered a millionth of the massive soundtrack world and our finds. Travis has a Magnum PI seven inch.

Podcast interview with Adam Widener

I got a chance to talk to Adam Widener after he sent me his single on Big Action Records, we got to emailing back and forth about his zine, Plastique Pop. He sent me his latest on Fuzz City (will post about that soon) and told me he toured with Bare Wires, one of my all time favorite bands, so I had to hear about touring with those guys and the recording of his latest.

Adam sent me a couple of unreleased tracks to include "One Foot in Front of the Other" plays first and later when he talks about how it came into being as well as "Babe, Don't Feel Blue" around the 22 minute mark.

We get into how he got hooked up with Big Action Records, his crazy awesome insert and the Zygoteens split with the hussy and the video shoot ay Coney island for "Groovy Intuitions" embedded below.

Interview with Brad from Loud and Clear Records

I got a chance to talk to Brad from Loud + Clear Records a couple of weeks back... I got an email about his 10th anniversary show, he sent me some singles, and had to find out how I'd missed hearing about his long running label. We talk about him recently quitting his 9-5, opening a recording studio, and learning things the DIY-hard-way from day one.
Brad's put out a bunch of singles recently because vinyl rules, but still believes in keeping things available on the interweb and itunes because we aren't all record nerds and it's about the music dammit!

I play an excerpt of his Chairs Missing single and the Goodbye Blue Monday/Comfortable For You split. All for sale over here at the L+C store.

Interview with Fat History Month

I really can't explain why I like Fat History Month so much, I mean it's easy to understand why Cheap Time is so great for instance, the catchy, garage crafted punk...it's a hardwired party... but this is so minimal and runs the range of imperceptibly quiet to raging distortion. It also might have to do with these guys being a duo, that dynamic of two artists together, inherintly knowing when the change is coming, the ability to easily improvise epic changes and instrumentation with just a faint reverb. They are pretty naked out there, without a lot of facade to distract, and they're writing the most delicate and moving post punk melodies...sometimes purely instrumental and sometimes with just a verse of abstract lyric. A perfect combination as far as I'm concerned. I'm irrationally obsessed.

That's why I'm supporting their kickstarter effort for a new van to tour with Ugh God to the west coast. For a mere $25 you get both bands entire discographies and most secretive demos....and a single. Plus I want them to make it to NY in August.

Not to mention they talk about mixing and recording a full length coming out on Sophmore Lounge soon.

Interview with Eric from La Corde

It finally Friday, but not just any Friday...this one includes a beautiful Monday. It's time for a very special episode of 7Inches, this time with La Corde, who sent me their single just a week or so ago. I talked with Eric who was drinking beer in the park talking to the 7Inches on the cell phone...it was a vision of my future this weekend.
We talked about some band history, influences, how their single was recorded and even the politics of music...without the Dead Kennedys would I even know where cambodia was?

Interview with Harding Street Assembly Lab pt 2

It's been another one of those weeks and I was a little late getting part two of the interview with the Lab assembled. It didn't help I ended up at Death By Audio with the brothers Condon from Herizon at a German Measles show Thursday night after hearing about an amazing documentary on underground music they've been shooting for the past year. More on the single from German Measles later, so grateful to those guys for suggesting that show. The Nymphettes were insane too...
So here's the wrap up of my conversation with Joanna and Nathan from Harding Street. Interview with Dustin from Skeleton Head Records

Talked to Dustin last week for the podcast about his new label, SkeletonHead Records and their first release from Tired Old Bones, turns out we have a Boston art connection through my friend Matt and I was blown away by the handmade silkscreen sleeve of this single. We nerded out on the printing process and the design in the interview and I played parts of a couple tracks on the single. Dustin has plans for putting out another Tired Old Bones single soon, actually in the next few months and future releases from yet unnamed Boston bands.

Interview with Fuck Montreal

I talked with Alex and Jenna from Fuck Montreal this week about their latest single on Stumparumper, or should I say they interviewed me in a weird way. I was asking the questions, but Alex was kind enough to record it from his end off a speakerphone and reedit. Let's just say it's almost an unreleased track.

For some reason my trusty system went all crazy in the middle of a snowstorm (what does that have to do with the internet, I'll never know) but anyway, it worked out, hopefully I an catch up with these guys in person someday and reassure them I'm not completely inept.

I think I hate my 45's dot blogspot Interview

I ended up talking with Jim from I think I hate my 45's, a blog I follow regularly. We ended up emailing back and forth after my friend Matt from Boston in an old podcast mentioned the Wicked Farleys, and as it turns out his brother used to play with them, it's a tiny tiny world.
We tried to meet up at the Kurt Vile show at Mercury, but ended up talking for an episode for 7inches instead. Lot's of nerding out about live shows in NY, and of course those tiny pieces of vinyl that brought us together...Amoeba records, first singles, early Slumberland handmade sleeves, writing professionally and what he's going to do when he gets finally gets to Z.

Sufjan live at Bowery

I caught the Sufjan show at the Bowery recently, his 'practice/workshop' tour and happened to record it. It came out pretty damn good, but I even spent time cleaning it up.
I'm listening to it right now, and not just because I'm posting it, because the new tracks are great, all electronic glitch, like Digital Ash Digital Urn, and he played every great song from Illinoise and Michigan...ridiculous
I swear you can hear someone crying, who came back by the bar to get napkins during Casmir Pulaski Day.
It's perfectly quiet, no one yells out songs like dickheads, really the only distracting thing is the floor creaking, and people whispering if you can believe that.
He's a god damn humble genius, he doesn't let you down. No wonder he sells out 4 nights in a row.
I have to sell some things for that BQE vinyl...like my kidneys.

So for the Friday show it's Sufjan at the bowery. All 7 hours.

More Podcast with Ryan Ep 59

Friday's podcast - Episode 59 features more Ryan... we play the Real Estate single 'Suburban beverage', I love it, even when I hear two idiots talking over it while editing. It's still good. Just imagine if you could listen to it by yourself...
Then the Gary War one sided single...hopefully at the right speed. Ryan thinks Gary War has something to do with Mars Volta, Can and Cory Archangel's 666 piece. Which makes Ryan talk about 3rd Ward and their handmade music night. That led me to put on that Mexican Summer Ariel Pink single which finishes it off.
