No Age - Liars Tour Split

Originally I was going to mention the Abe Vigoda repress from PPM because I liked it a lot, I know they are a little bit of a mess live, according to my friend who saw them open for No Age at South Street Seaport....their live reinterpretation of their new full length (on PPM By the way) didn't translate live.
Apparently they went on with Telepathe sometime between 7 and 8....No Age didn't start until 8:45? Weird and annoying. I love seeing shows outside in the summer, especially free. It kind of works out nice to see Seaport shows Friday and then Sunday shows at Mccareen Pool. The seaport isn't that crowded and if you want to have shit Uno's pizza you could sit way up on this balcony....so I'm all for this space, but the show was over by 9:15 and no encore no nothing....I'm sure they have some kind of agreement with the space to be over by dark or something.
The sound can be shitty there too, I understand they are working in a really bad space, but they should have been doing this enough by now to figure it out.
No Age was still suffering from trying to make that jump to playing huge venues. They were fumbling a little working the crowd and the sound was shit. Not that have to have perfect sound or anything, it might even work for them to play with the differences in sound quality, or the sound guy was trying to overcompensate for the intended mess.

But I digress...this tour 7" was at PPM.... I overlooked it somehow, so I thought I'd throw it out there as I didn't see it mentioned anywhere...No Age and Liars split, kind of like when Jack Black makes fun of John Cusack for slipping in a new band with some classics in his mix tape. This 7" is like passing the torch to the new guard. We like you, you are bad ass, join the club...and it's on PPM so the Liars get back in touch with their underground side.
I wish I could find out if these are album tracks or completely unique to the 7". A crazy split that I didn't know existed....can't wait to hear this one.

I had to pick 'worst songs' for a year end looserecord.com thing and glancing at my itunes ratings I saw I gave 'Houseclouds' 1 star. That's definitely going on my list.
I read a rolling stone review that 'Houseclouds' was the Liars doing happy mondays. (!!?) Fuck...that sounds like hell to me.
How did this make it onto the album? I can't believe they just thought it was a good idea, that it completely came from them. Did Mute thin they maybe had a dance hit? After Drums... were they looking to have a seemingly solid hit to recoup the packaging costs or something? I want to delete it from the album. It gets stuck in my head and in the worst way.
These tracks have been reviewed at Norman records as aggressive and noisy. Thank god. They are so good at it...maybe that's it, they wanted to mess with everyone's expectations. Genius.
Supposedly this Dvd includes a cover of Nirvana's territorial pissings, which I definitely want to see, still it is a lot for both.
I've been trying to see if I can find out anything about the label and it's upcoming releases...but no luck. I guess they are planning more releases like this.

Mattress - in your pocket

I swear I just stopped listening to old live joy division from heart and soul, like disc 4, for a second to listen to mattress' myspace and I thought I forgot to turn JD off and it was still playing...crazy.

But only for a second, this song Mirror it has the same determination and drive as JD, the vocals start off a little subdued and dark and then launch into a chanting tirade. All of it sounds like it's been processed and played through custom circuits and then a radio shack mixer, in short it's that electro-punk greatness, but not exactly with that manic dance energy. It's darker, instead of dancing you should be looking over your shoulder for the experiments gone wrong in the corner of this basement show. Or it could be I've been listening to Joy division too long.
Have to go see control...tonight.

There is this great keyboard noise that even on the tiniest computer speakers is unignorable and piercing, I don't think anyone else can take it but I have to hear it again.
Wow, there was a liars noise at the end that was so perfect. Like from 'There's always room on the broom.' That indescribable electronic distortion.
I ordered this but it's been a while and I think it got filed next to the record player as 'must listen to', but that pile isn't getting any smaller, and these jems are waiting.

Damn I like these guys, I have to go listen to this 7" later....

You know that's why in the end I like myspace....it's the ugliest uniform piece of crap, but every band has a presence and I appreciate that.

300 that's it? Wow thats really not fair. I have to see if these tracks are anything like mirror. If so, I have a new favorite band.

crystal castles / health

There's two seven inches here released from Crystal Castles and Health...I think.
I've been hearing the buzz about crystal castles and am definitely curious about Health.
I love the 8-bit nintendo-core sound from crystal castles and they are really punking it out. I don't think I've heard these sounds appropriated in this direction so successfully. It really kicks ass. I can only imagine a boss level in crystal castles where you have to have a dance off in an earthquake. Very excited to hear this video game nightmare.
This is such a nostalgic sound, and it would be easy to gimmickly pass it off as bad dance, but I think they dropping a new punk aesthetic on it.
It's crazy they are already playing webster hall? Wow.
Health sounds are coming from all kinds of places, there must be some liars in there...haven't given them a listen enough to know.

First is this split on Lovepump united, they released a great USAisamonster picturedisc and a crazy double 7" of awesome noise/experimental stuff.

Not exactly sure how to describe Health, they're sort of one of those awesome WTF noise rock combos, who weave wildly from sound to sound, while somehow retaining a distinct musical personality. Health, to us at least, sound like part hooky pop, new wave weirdness, Sonic Youth style indie rock soundscaping, and chaotic free noise. Not always in equal measures. The first track here is all chaotic tribal drumming and freaked out noise, angular guitars, and breathy SY style vocals, imagine some hybrid of Sonic Youth, 23 Skidoo and This Heat. Hypnotic and off kilter and so good. The other Health track is some weird eighties electro jam, with weird affected vocals, vintage synths, warm reverbed percussion and even handclaps.
But somehow the two tracks sound perfect together...
The flipside is the awesomely named Crystal Castles, who are not only named after one of the coolest video games ever, they also sort of sound like a punk rock version of the Crystal Castles music.
The core of their sound is full on 8 bit Nintendo core, all bleeps and bloops and buzzes, but over the top is sprawled some fierce Riot Grrl growl, plenty of distortion and crunch, with howled banshee female vocals, swathed in that weird Cher vocal effect. Weird. And then strangely, the other track removes everything BUT the video game jamz, leaving a tune that sounds like it could be music straight from some secret level in Mario Bros....
Nice thick sleeve, with creepy cover art, and pressed on super thick white vinyl.

The other one I saw, and this is why I had to combine these posts is the Crimewave split by both health and crystal castles and it's on trouble records for the UK.

Liars - Plaster casts of everything

I'm beginning to understand their master plan a little bit more now... The other side of Mt. Heart attack was a concept album, outside of their previous music direction of super noise experiments, with this new one they seem to be headed back to the noise/rock direction. There are still the tracks of drone drumming and high pitch layered singing which lulls me to sleep. Suprisingly 'plaster casts..' is reminding me of Ministry, it's guitar heavy and incessantly pounding the riff over and over. I keep thinking about them in Germany riding their bikes around and coming back to a warehouse studio and pounding this out.
I hope they come back to Warsaw to tour for this new one. This is going to be impressive live.

Liars- Plaster Casts of Everything 7"/CD (Mute) 'Plaster Casts Of Everything' by the Liars is an upbeat, dramatic, repetitive, heavy, dirty, scuzzy, intense beast from this schizoid band. Catchy and simultaneously noisy. Quality alternative rock music. It's like The Stooges cossed with Can which is just about the greatest combination known to man/ woman.
